California Parents Take Newsom to Court Over a Bill Banning Schools From Informing Them of Their Child’s Gender Identity

Nine parents from California are suing Governor Gavin Newsom following the signing of a bill that bans schools from informing parents if their child wishes to be recognized as a different gender.

The legislation, Assembly Bill 1955, requires that school district employees do not disclose any information regarding a student’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression without the student’s consent unless mandated by state or federal law.

The bill asserts, “LGBTQ+ pupils have the right to express themselves freely at school without fear, punishment, or retaliation, including that teachers or administrators might ‘out’ them without their permission.” It further argues that policies mandating the outing of students without their consent infringe upon their rights to privacy and self-determination.

This law comes as the number of minors identifying as transgender rises, with approximately 300,000 youths aged 13-17 identifying this way according to a 2022 Williams Institute study.

With the assistance of the Liberty Justice Center, a nonprofit based in Texas, nine parents filed a lawsuit in the Eastern District of California against Newsom, Attorney General Robert Bonta, and State Superintendent Tony Thurmond.

Emily Rae, senior counsel at the Liberty Justice Center, stated, “School officials do not have the right to keep secrets from parents, but parents do have a constitutional right to know what their minor children are doing at school.”

Rae went on to say, “Parents are the legal guardians of their children, not Gov. Newsom, Attorney General Bonta, or Superintendent Thurmond.

We will continue to defend parents’ rights and children’s well-being by challenging invasive laws like AB 1955 in court, at no cost to taxpayers.”

Why the Left’s Tantrum About the SAVE Act is Total BS

There is a lot happening in our country, and still the Left feels obligated to continue its tantrum about election integrity acts.

Only five brave Democrats dared to join Republicans in voting for the SAVE Act, requiring proof of American citizenship for voter registration. 

The argument the Left gives is that the requirements of proving American citizenship are so onerous that millions of Americans will not be able to register to vote. Those requirements include any of the following: passport, birth certificate, or photo ID showing a person was born in the United States.

Is it a pain to track those down if you’ve lost them? Yes, it can be. And will it prevent some people from going through the trouble of doing so? Probably. So on the one hand, it is a valid argument. Until you look at the other side of this coin.

Where is the Democrat outcry about another new policy about to be implemented in May 2025? One that also requires the same proof of citizenship the SAVE Act requires? 

Beginning in May 2025, any American citizen planning to get on a domestic flight must also have provided proof of American citizenship. The Real Clear ID will be mandatory for any of us to board a flight.

Many states already require this documentation to obtain a driver’s license. Those who do not are offering the Real Clear License - for an additional fee, of course. For those residents in states that do not currently require proof of citizenship for a license, they may opt to skip going through that process and start packing their passports for domestic flights, instead. 

A passport alone is insufficient documentation to satisfy the DMV requirements for a Real Clear ID. If you lost your SS card you must get a new one or provide an alternate proof of your SS#.  Or, you can just not do that and use your passport for all flights. Renewing that passport is easy enough and does not require wasting half a day at the DMV. 

But where is the outcry over this? Won’t the same Americans who won’t be able to vote with such requirements, also be prevented from flying? And don’t most of us tend to fly more than once every four years?  Isn’t that hypocritical, to not object to?

Ask this of the next person who throws outrage about the SAVE Act your way
