Democrat Commission in NYC Refuses to Give Voters a Chance to End Sanctuary City Policies

Democracy!!!! Democrat’s open border policies have led to the arrival of over 208,000 illegals in New York City.  This, in turn, has created a surge in the city's shelter population and taxpayer expenditures, as acknowledged in a report by New York City’s Charter Revision Commission. The taxpayer cost of providing for the illegals in NYC is expected to reach over $12 billion through 2025.

Crime, too, has escalated, from vandalism and petty theft to violent assaults, including the arrest of Bernardo Raul Castro Mata for allegedly shooting at two NYPD officers during a foot pursuit and the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl at knifepoint by another illegal migrant.

New Yorkers have had enough of the liberal city’s sanctuary city policies, but the people they elected to make those decisions don’t seem to care.

Despite a valiant effort by some of the moderate members of the Charter Revision Commission, the Democrats prevailed in shutting down the possibility of including a vote on the sanctuary city policies to appear on November’s ballot.

New York City Council’s Common Sense Caucus, a bipartisan group of nine council members advocating for moderate policies, introduced legislation last month aimed at repealing laws that prevent NYC law enforcement from cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The proposed legislation would also repeal laws prohibiting city officials from partnering with ICE agents to enforce federal immigration laws and using city resources to assist deportation officers.

This legislation specifically targets sanctuary laws enacted by former Mayor Bill de Blasio, who in 2014 signed a bill limiting the NYPD's cooperation with ICE agents, and in 2018 reinforced this policy. A member of the Common Sense Caucus stated, "We have enough criminals in this city," and asserted that illegal immigrants who commit crimes should be "deported without hesitation."

But not even surprising support from Liberal Mayor Eric Adams could sway the  Commission into actually allowing the people they are elected to serve to have a voice in the issues impacting them.

Its official response to the matter is as follows; "The Commission has heard considerable testimony calling for an amendment to change so-called 'sanctuary city' laws. However, given the repeated executive and legislative actions in this area, judicial interpretations of relevant state law, and the ongoing challenges posed by the influx of new arrivals, the Commission does not believe a ballot question on this issue is appropriate at this time."

GOP Councilwoman Vickie Paladino, also a member of the Common Sense Caucus expressed her disappointment to the Daily Caller News Foundation, stating, "As far as I can tell right now, the referendum is dead. It’s disappointing but unsurprising that the charter commission will not be allowing the people their say on such a massively important issue."

Paladino went on to rip the Democrat’s decision, saying, “The fact is that our city’s sanctuary city status has become deeply unpopular, even among Democrat voters, and was almost certain to be defeated by voters if a vote was allowed. But once again, the party that lectures us about ‘democracy’ is not interested in practicing it...the Democrat party is completely dedicated to open borders and all the chaos that goes with it, and will never allow any measures to enable immigration enforcement no matter how bad things get or what voters want. Make no mistake — if they thought the voters of NYC were going to uphold the law, the referendum would be on the ballot with great fanfare.”

Colleen Knull was working a summer job as kitchen staff at a Jasper lodge and never expected to be on the line as a lifesaver.

A week ago when an evacuation order was issued for the area, Colleen was off duty but didn't hesitate to help: Colleen woke 16 hikers up who might not have known of the fire and walked them 4 hours to safety.

“There was more intense smoke, my eyes were burning, there was ash falling constantly,” said Rebecca Tocher, a hiker who was in Knull’s group.

“She was an amazing leader and was just making sure that everyone was working together.”

Knull used her knowledge of the area and tracking skills to navigate in the dark as well as training from the job.

“I had previously rode up a horse up to that lodge on that same trail and throughout the way me and my employer, we had cut logs on the way up," said Knull. "There were 67 logs, so there would be 67 cut logs on the way down … So I used my tracking skills – following horse tracks, horse manure.”

“She was just on it and she led it, the whole way,” said David Richmond, another grateful hiker said.

“I do it because at the end of the day, I know I’d want to go home, and I’d want somebody there to help,” said Knull.

During the hike down, the group communicated with search and rescue crews to help with the evacuation. Knull eventually drove all 16 people in her pickup truck out of the evacuation zone. No one was seriously injured. Knull says she has even more resolve to continue pursuing a job with the fire department to help others.
