Seven Years After 16 Service Members Killed, Federal Grand Jury Indicts and Arrests Engineer

Prime time coverage and front page headlines were given to this story when 15 Marines and One Navy Corpsman were killed in a C-130 crash. Sixteen funerals were held. Sixteen families torn apart.

The Service members were on a routine transport flight from Stewart Air Force Base in Newburgh, NY, to Yuma, Arizona, for training. Neither they, nor their families, had any reason to believe they were in any danger. But life is unpredictable - especially when you choose a life of service.

The propeller on their plane came off. It ripped through the body of the aircraft, and the rest of the aircraft came apart in pieces. The men, if they survived the initial carnage, fell to their deaths.

Two of them were found tied together.

It was the largest military aviation accident in years, and the country rallied around the families.

But, as happens, life went on and the country turned its attention to other matters.

Meantime the families were left with unanswered questions.

Now, almost seven years to the day, an announcement has been made that an engineer has been arrested and indicted on charges related to this crash.

Last week, James Michael Fisher was arrested on an indictment issued by a federal grand jury in the Northern District of Mississippi charging him with obstruction of justice and false statements during a criminal investigation into the cause of that crash. Fisher, who formerly lived in Georgia, moved to Portugal. He was arrested there.

He was Lead Propulsion Engineer at Warner Robins Logistics Center, which was responsible for maintaining the aircraft propellers.

Fisher stands accused of making false statements and concealing documentation about the propeller in this incident.

An investigation found that corrosion on the propeller was missed. That corrosion led to the deterioration of the propeller, meaning the crash was preventable.

Families were given a heads up about the arrest shortly before the press release was issued - but they may have missed the news otherwise, as mainstream media doesn’t appear to care much about it.

The 16 Service Members, and their families, don’t seem to matter much today, with so much reality TV playing out in our government.

So we will share the story here, and remind America about the enormous sacrifice made by these men and their families:

They were Cpl. Dan Baldassare, 20; Staff Sgt. Robert Cox, 28; the pilot, Captain Sean Elliott, 30; Major Caine Goyette; Gunnery Sgt. Mark Hopkins, 34; Sgt. Chad Jenson, 25; Gunnery Sgt. Brendan Johnson, 45; Sgt. Julian Kevianne, 31; Staff Sgt. William Joseph Kundrat 33; Sgt. Talon Leach; Sgt. Owen Lennon, 26; Navy Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Ryan Lohrey, 30; Sgt, Joseph Murray, 26; Cpl. Collin Schaaff, 22; Sgt. Dietrich Schmieman, 26; and Staff Sgt. Joshua Snowden, 31.

President Joe Biden Doubles Down In Lengthy Letter To Congressional Democrats, Says He Is Not Dropping Out Of The Race.

Great decision, Joe.

The President said it’s time for the question of him dropping out “to end.”

“Now that you have returned from the July 4th recess, I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump.”

“The question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now. And it's time for it to end.”

“We have one job. And that is to beat Donald Trump. We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election.”

“Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us. It is time to come together, move forward as a unified party, and defeat Donald Trump.”

GOOD NEWS CORNER

A 60-year-old man from San Diego, Mark Backes (@runmarkrun24), will be running across America to raise awareness for Parkinson’s disease. This decision was motivated by the passing of his father due to the disease and his wife's subsequent diagnosis. Mark's run is aimed at both raising funds and educating people about Parkinson's disease.

REEL OF THE DAY

American country singer Johnny Cash released this spoken-word tribute to the flag in 1974 as a response to the widespread disillusionment that followed the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal. This is patriotism at its best.
