Tech Issue at Cybersecurity Company Triggers Global Ground Stop

Global IT outages have disrupted airlines, airports, banks, and media companies, affecting millions of people. American Airlines, United, and Delta requested a global ground stop from the FAA. By 5 a.m. ET, American Airlines announced they had resolved the issue, attributing the disruptions to a vendor's technical problem.

The FAA instructed air traffic controllers to inform pilots about the communication issues affecting multiple airlines. Despite the problems, flights already airborne continued to their destinations, but no new flights from American, United, or Delta were taking off.

American Airlines stated that the issue was linked to CrowdStrike and was being addressed.

United Airlines confirmed a third-party software outage affecting their systems, causing them to hold aircraft at departure airports. Melbourne Airport in Australia and Berlin Airport in Germany also reported disruptions, along with the London Stock Exchange, Google Cloud, Microsoft, and Gatwick Airport in the UK.

Microsoft acknowledged an issue affecting access to its 365 apps and services. CrowdStrike admitted responsibility for the error and is working to resolve it, advising users to monitor updates via their customer support portal. CrowdStrike is an American cybersecurity technology company based in Austin, Texas. It provides cloud workload protection and endpoint security, threat intelligence, and cyber attack response services.

David Cullen from CISO Lens, the body that represents cyber security professionals in Australia and New Zealand, says CrowdStrike's software is "heavily entrenched" in global IT supply chains, so the issue doesn't just affect its customers, but its customers' customers and so on.

George Kurtz, the CEO of CrowdStrike, has released a statement on X, formerly Twitter, confirming that the outages were not the result of a security incident or cyber attack, but the result of a "defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts" during a routine update.

Other areas impacted include online banking. Global IT outages have also been reported in many countries across the world including Berlin Airport in Germany, the London Stock Exchange, Google Cloud, Microsoft, and Gatwick Airport in the United Kingdom.

Biden Campaign Denies Newest Report That Biden Will Drop Out

Newsmax commentator Mark Halperin claimed on Thursday that Biden is dropping out of the race. Citing “multiple anonymous sources,” Halperin said on air that the announcement might even come as early as this weekend.

"According to multiple Democratic sources, this is happening all of a sudden," Halperin told "Carl Higbie FRONTLINE" from the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee…

"Everyone said it would happen gradually and then all at once. And that's what's happening. According to my sources, President Biden has agreed to step down as the Democratic nominee. It will happen as early as this weekend.”

He went on to add further details, including that the speech has already been drafted and that Biden will not be endorsing Kamala.

According to Halperin, the Democrats will instead hold an open convention, where the delegates will select the next Democratic presidential nominee.

Halperin’s report is widely disputed, including an unequivocal denial from the Biden campaign, according to Fox News reporter Brooke Singman, who said Biden campaign spokesman T.J. Ducklo denied the report, calling it “entirely inaccurate.” Singman quoted an unnamed Biden aide as saying, 'The President is more committed than ever to winning this election.”
