Colin Powell may have retired with four stars and served in several other powerful positions, but even he knows we all need a helping hand sometimes.
Four lug nuts went up against his four stars, and the lug nuts won the round. But America’s historic warrior and influential statesman found himself a battle buddy on the side of 495 and together they prevailed.
Anthony Maggert has long revered Colin Powell.
Anthony was on his way to an appointment at Walter Reed when he spotted his hero on the side of the road, and jumped at the chance to help.
The veteran-turned-civilian employee lost a leg in Afghanistan. Still, he leapt at the opportunity to serve the man he’d respected for so long. The tire was changed and the two men resumed their day’s schedules. Neither one realized the impression they would leave on the other until Anthony sent General Powell a message, complete with the selfie he took.
General Powell shared both the message and the selfie on social media, thanking Anthony for his help and for the words that moved him so much.
“After 33 years in the military you were the giant whose shoulders we stood upon to carry the torch to light the way and now it is tomorrow’s generation that must do the same.”
What started as a routine drive to routine appointments for both men, turned into a moment both will carry with them for some time. Both men are giants. Both light the way for future generations.
Stories like this remind us all that no matter how might a man is, there will be times he needs a helping hand and that no matter our own challenges, we all have the ability to help another.
